LqPV School Board hears update on high school facilities project

by Lydia Rebehn

The April 22 meeting of the Lac qui Parle Valley School Board kicked off with an update on their high school facilities projects from Wold Architects and Engineers and Contegrity Group. Paul Aplikowski, of Wold, opened the presentation with a review of design drawings for the highschool theater, the grow room and several of the athletic fields.

For the theater project, Aplikowski said that along with general technology and cosmetic updates, such as replacing all of the seating, they also plan to make minor changes to the layout. This will range from creating an expanded section of accessible seating at the rear of the theater to reopening the ticket booth.

Another topic of consideration for the theater is the closed up and long defunct orchestra pit. Aplikowski explained that their initial plans had not included any alterations or work to the stage itself. However, after their theater consultant inspected the space, the orchestra pit became an area of concern as it was determined that it needs both added structural support and some form of fire control, likely in the form of sprinklers. The stage is constructed of wood that was not treated for fire retardance, hence the latter concern. This being an issue that was only recently discovered, Aplikowski said that at the time of the meeting they were still in the process of determining how best to address it.

As for the athletic facilities, Aplikowski reviewed architectural drawings for the track and baseball/multipurpose fields, as well the new tennis courts; the latter of which board member Danny Perseke commented on, stating that drainage and a proper base for the courts must be made a top priority.
